BY WILLIAM HENDERSON The Father/Son Golf Outing was first initiated on Father’s Day Weekend in June 2003.  The concept of the “Outing” was to promote companionship, camaraderie, networking and an all around good time amongst family and friends. The other purpose of the golf outing was to celebrate and show appreciation to my father hence the “Father/Son” title.  Over the years, decades, centuries even, you hear about how the presence of a male figure - particularly for black boys - has decreased.  You hear and see so much negativity about the black father that you wonder if any worthwhile dads even exist.  I wanted to show and prove that at least one exists among the madness. My father, whose name is Pearlie, (yeah I said Pearlie) is a special man.  He is 69 years young and an avid golfer.  He isn’t your typical man when it comes to sports.  My dad’s not a big sport fan, so he doesn’t care too much about football, baseball, of basketball.  He knows the names of the main personalities past and present, but mainly due to my mother who is the sportsman of the two.  She can tell you stuff from the ...

Here are my three favorite posts from year one of Dallas South Blog #3 - Nanette Lee leaving K104   It was amazing that my tuner happened to be on K104 as Skip Murphy was announcing last January that Nanette Lee would no longer be on the Morning Show.  I thought that this was pretty important news since the show had once been so popular in Dallas.  I pulled into a library at lunch and put together 6 or 7 sentences about her dismissal.  There were a few comments in the first few days, but as the weeks and months progressed, this post continued to get comments.  This post taught me the power of Google with this post, because this is the #2 returned site if you Google 'Nanette Lee': thus all the comments. #2  Paris Texas Posts I just grouped the whole lot in one category.  This site changed a lot with the coverage of this story.  In Paris Texas Black Teenage Sentenced to 7 years, Racial Tensions Running High  Paris, Texas Case Highlights Challenges Faced by Black Children Across the Country  Paris, Texas Schools Help/Fail African-American Students Just Like the Rest  Top Ten Misconceptions and Miscalculations Relating ...

Howard Witt, who brought national attention to possible black racial bias in Paris, TX and Jena, Louisiana, has a different type of story that will run in Sunday's Chicago Tribune (or is it different?). See Witt's Sunday article here .  Witt reports on the murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, a young Knoxville, Tennessee couple who were carjacked, kidnapped, and raped before being murdered in January after going out for a date.  Apparently conservative groups are trying to push this case as a hate crime. My first thought upon reading Mr. Witt's story was to reflect upon the murders of two of my college friends, Reginald Broadus and Crystal Miller.  Reginald and Crystal, two African-American students at Texas A&M University, were murdered execution style in the summer of 1994.  They were killed at the hands of two black teens who were looking to take someone out that night, and they happened to come upon my frat brother and my soror. I can't say what the motive was in the Knoxville murders for brothers Lemaricus Davidson, 25, and Letalvis Cobbins, 24; Cobbins' girlfriend, Vanessa Coleman, 18; or George Thomas, 24, but it fits a pattern of uber violent crimes that ...

Three more of my favorites including 2 breaking news stories and my most popular subject. #6 -  Black Images Book Store is Shutting Down Dallas South Blog was the first entity to report that Mrs. Emma Rodgers was shutting down Black Images, leaving a void in Wynnewood Village and the African-American community.  The Dallas Morning News followed up with a story two days later, and then Channel 8 did a piece as well.  Mrs. Rodgers is still pursuing her passion, promoting black authors around town.  #5 -  Don Imus calls Rutgers Women's Basketball Team "nappy headed hos" Before going to bed on April 6, I received an email blast from Essence Magazine alerting me to the Imus story. I posted the transcript that same night and because of how the internet works, many surfers searching for updates were directed to Dallas South the following week.  April 10th of that week became the busiest day in the history of the site, with 1,048 unique visitors.  That week was also the busiest week thus far in Dallas South's one year history.  This also caused April to be the busiest month (over 17,000 visitors).   #4 - Does Porn Count as Economic Development? ...

On Thursday night. the the friends, family, and readers of Dallas South got together with the folks of Real Men Cook Dallas and had a wonderful celebration.  Mrs. Lorna Tate was an outstanding host as we partied at Brooklyn to great tunes and the NBA Finals.   Thanks to all who came out, including NAACP Dallas president Casey Thomas, 3-time basketball championship coach James Mays II, and former Ft. Two more of my favorite posts from the past year. #8  No guns, No Glory This was a post I did after a series of gun violence episodes back in July of last year.  I re-posted this after the Va Tech shootings. #7  15 Year-Old shot and killed by DART police officer  Simple post where I questioned the shooting of a young black male by DART police.  This post caused a discussion with 56 comments at Pegasus News. 

The latest Arbitron radio ratings were released today and though I have not seen them, I've been briefed on how the preliminary numbers are looking.  According to sources, K104 is trending towards #6 overall in the Dallas-Ft. Worth market. Dallas-Ft. Worth is the #5 radio market in the country Radio Online has K104 ranked #4 for Spring Phase 1, down from second in the Winter 07 rankings.  Radio One's KBFB - 97.9 The Beat ranks #2 on Radio Online's list, and is apparently trending towards second in Arbitron as well. For years, K104 maintained #1 status, mostly due to the highly successful Skip Murphy & Company morning show.   Apparently the latest rankings will be a 16-year low for the station, their worst since Tom Joyner left the KKDA outlet.    The fortunes of K104 seemed to change after The Wig was released from the station, but things have gone from bad to worse since Nanette Lee was dismissed back in January.  The latest ratings could cost Skip Murphy his job at some point: I think he may need to dust off his resume.  It's a sad story of messing with a good thing.  The family ...

I thought I'd share some of my favorite posts from the past year.  #10  10 Things the BCS Taught Us This Year In my heart I feel like I could publish a good sports blog, but unfortunately there are only 24 hours in a day.  This post was a lot of fun, and though it's a bit of a departure from the normal content, it's a big part of who I am. #9    Interview with FCE's Marcia Page   My first interview was with Carter High Football Coach Allen Wilson, but this one established a format that I have used every since.  The folks at Pegasus News cited this as one of the posts that alerted them to the site.

I'd ask that everyone indulge me over the next week as I attempt to publish quality posts and at the same time celebrate Dallas South's one year anniversary.  It's really a celebration of readers and the folks that have kept this thing running.   I have to thank my wife Tamela who has supported my blogging habit over the last year.  I thank my mom Linda for being my most loyal reader and encouraging me to write for all of these years. Ed Haskin who publishes Parenting Toys has done all the technical stuff regarding Dallas South since I moved over from blogger.  He truly is the reason why I've been able to present the information in such a clear format and I also thank him for securing my domain name and email. Mike Davis started Dallas Progress about the same time that Dallas South got off the ground.  Within months he was voted Best Political Blogger in Dallas by the Observer and I thought that the internet might not be big enough for both sites (that was stupid on pure principle).  Mike has been very supportive over the last year, I call him my best friend ...

I was surprised when I got a 9 X 12 color flyer in the mail this week asking:"What do you really know about Tom Leppert?"  On the front side of the page below a plasma TV screen with Leppert's picture are the words Pol. Adv. Paid by Ed Oakley for Dallas Mayor Campaign. On the reverse side are three statements: Leppert: Bad for the environment Leppert: Poor record with minorities Leppert: Fined for kickbacks The flyer then goes on to expand on each point.  At the bottom of the page it asks "Is he really the right person to be our Mayor?" and refers to the website TruthAboutTom.com .  These ads are negative by any stretch.  This is the candidate local Democrats have decided to support huh? Mike Davis at Dallas Progress broke down the most recent mayoral debate from WFAA 8.  In the same post he quotes a barkingdogs.org interview where Oakley denied any knowledge of the Truth About Tom website or the accompanying T.V. ad.  This is an unfortunate turn of events in what I thought has been a pretty good campaign.  If there's something out there that needs to be known then by all means ...
