Skip Cheatham and the Playground propel K104 back to the top of Dallas radio ratings

In the latest Arbitron ratings, K104/KKDA-FM appeared in a familiar place, #1. The move to the top comes after the station had fallen to fifth in the spring book. Kid Kraddick and KISS-FM dropped from 1st to 3rd.
Skip Cheatham, who serves as the station's program director, basically hired himself to recreate the morning drive time slot. That meant breaking up Skip Murphy and the Morning team, or what was left of it after Nannette Lee and the Wig had been dismissed.
Now Cheatham, along with Lady Jade, Mozan; Murphy holdovers Chris Arnold and Sam Putney, along with like 100 other people make up "The Playground."
97.9 (KBFB-FM) The Beat finished the summer ratings period ranked #4. This is up from #6 in the spring. 97.9 is home to The Ricky Smiley Morning Show. 105.7 and Steve Harvey rose to 9th from 18th in the summer ratings.
The Playground has apparently found their audience, taking little time to get back on top. While Murphy and the crew had a loyal following, Cheatham is probably bringing new listeners to the station. The show appeals to the much younger demographic that advertisers covet.
Smiley and 97.9 continue to gain ground and move up the charts. His mix of comedy and consciousness seems to appeal to some of K104's former listeners. The fall numbers should be really interesting.

please get rid of lady jade she is soooo….. fake.She acts like she is so goody-to-shoes,she gets on my nerves her voice is nerve racking.In also when Fly-tye & Skip Chetham do that punk thing when they cheer thats not cute & not funny. Also Fly-tye (edit) what kind of man gets there eye-bow threated (edit) .Really the morning team needs improvement…I WILL SUPPORT…but you all needs to do a better job…

Congrats to the Playground. I’ve tried but I can’t take it any longer? The poor grammar, the fake, lound and obnoxious laughs…enough! Additionally, YOU HAVE TOO MANY KIDS ON THE PLAYGROUND and everyone wants to talk at the same time…..what are their roles?
Maybe I’m not your target audience, so after listening to K104 continiously for years, it’s time I move on. Goodluck Playground.

What happened to Mozan? After Nanette left I was wondering who they would replace her with and low and behold, they got an immature kid by the name of Lady Jade. I don’t listen to the radio after 6:00 so I had no clue who she was. She tries too hard to be “Nanette” and it’s not working. She’s very immature and is not ready for the adult conversations that the men have in the morning. She has this saying that “ya’ll are manish.” Little boys are manish, not grown men…Grow up or go back to late nights where you can talk to the kids.
I only listen now for Sam Putney and June Bug and that’s after the Steve Harvey Show goes off at 9:00am so that’s just an hour. Fly-tie is NOT funny and nor was he ever - even when he was on that other radio station where they fired everyone because they sucked…I think it was 105.7. I only make this comment because he is so negative.
Mozan made a good team member from my point of view because she could handle the adult conversations - regardless of the directions they went and she was not offended by anything. I loved that about her. She was an excellent replacement for Nanette.
Mozan, I have no idea where you are but I really miss you and wish you all the luck in the world.

I miss Skip Murphy and the real Morning Team! I try really hard to listen to you Guys now but it is so hard. Sometimes you all kick in a few laughs. I really have a problem with the degrading music that you all continue to play over and over and over again. You don hear all of that stuff on 106fm (KISSFM) This station offers so many good thing as for as the community work but our YOUTH are being fed CRAP. I know there has to be better HIP HOP/RAP than what we here on public radio right? I guess the MAN really got you all MY BROTHER!

You would think after the community has cried for over a year K104 would make a change but they haven’t. It is clear Lady Jade is not a professional and neither is June Bug. June Bug is a cool guy and when you meet him in the streets he is nice but a morning show host he is not, just like I’m not a model although in my mind I pretend to be! Lady Jades telling Sam to “shut up” and such is disrespectful b/c at the end of the day he is her elder. Where is Mozan? I hardly listen to them in the morning any way. It is flat, that bell in the background is immature and cheap, Skip C. is too old to continue saying “yo”, Fly Ty is unnecessary fodder and June Bug’s skits are played. TRY AGAIN. We love Sam and Chris, true radio professionals.

K104 sucks. the radio station confirmed that they would be at my nephew’s benefit drive Saturday at the Hutchins Senior Center and no one called to let them know that they would not be albe to show. YOU ALL SUCKS. my nephew has been in the hospital since before thanksgiving after having a bad car accident which threw him out of the car,he was care flighted to the hospital.I am sure you already know this since my neice called in to ask and also was given a comfromation that you would be there. you all prove to me that k104 is’nt about S–T

I have to say that I was surprised to read all of the degrading remarks left before this one regarding K104’s Playground. I think that the transition from Murphy to Cheatham has gone admirably well. It may be that the people who are so adament about disliking the playground are just bitter about the dismantling of the previous Morning Show. Get over it. K104 is now targeted towards a younger audience, therefore is seasoned with younger DJ’s. And, apparently contrary to popular consensus, I think Lady Jade does an amazing job. She’s clever, she’s witty, and she holds her own in a studio full of guys. If you were an avid listener, you would notice that she (like Jay-Z, apparently) dumbs down to her audience. She asks the simple questions or for obvious explanations because she knows that they probably have listeners who are thinking the exact same thing, and since they aren’t there in person to ask, she does it for them. Same thing with Fly-Ty. He doesn’t believe half the crap he says on the show, but for the sake of argument or debate, he takes the road less traveled with more controversy.
In short, I think people should just get with times or tune in to K-Soul. LADY JADE ROCKS!!!

Hi, My name is La Crisha, I LOVE K104. U guys are pretty cool. u know everybody have HATERS!!!!! even i do.. K104 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. HATERS keep u going, and i know i have. u guys do a good job, and every job is NOT easy, its hard work……SKIP CHEATHAM, I have 2 kids and one on the way. My son is 8yrs old and my daughter is 5yrs old. They father been in jail for 5 long years. so they really dont know him. My son dont have a father figure in his life.. My son name is Charles Ray. a.k.a C-Ray.. he love to eat, skateboard, play football,basetball, and play video games. he doesnt have his own yet…. but most of all he LOVE SCHOOL… and thats important.. and my daughter, her name is Heavinn, she like to dance and sing and also LOVE SCHOOL. so K104 if u guys have anything going on for kids.. Still waiting for the day that the playground gets rid of LADY JADE. I cant stand the way she talks and that voice…I used to love K104 morning show when they were more intellectual. I don’t know what type of audience they are trying to reach but it’s not the people commuting to work in the mornings.

I have no idea why everyone is hatin! If you don’t like K104 just change the station. If they aren’t interesting me that morning I just go to another station or put in one of my cd’s. Usually I’m laughing right along with them because they are off the chain for the most part. Sam is a fool, Lady Jade keep doing your thing, don’t worry about the haters, they will always be there. If you notice, most of the people who have made comments couldnt even correctly spell most of the words they were trying to use to criticize you. That’s what’s wrong with people, they don’t know how to change. Times change all the time and if you don’t change with them you are going to be left out! Keep on doin what you all do and prove those haters wrong!

I just want to say that I loved the original K104 crew; Skip Murphy and company. I know that sometimes change is good, but this time, change should have never came. Some may say that we are hating on the new morning team, but it’s not called hating; it’s called speaking our minds. This new playground team has been here for a little bit now and I still can’t get use to them, some may say, change the station and that is what I do. I like Sam Putney, so I have to go back to hear him. I wish he had the role he had when he ws with Skip Murphy (he was funnier). Lady Jade, I don’t like her role on the station because she is too loud and she even talks crazy to the program director, he is a person who could make her disappear and he need to do that. June Bug, u’re not funny (STOP IT!). Playground, stop the gay segments, there’re not funny. Skip C. I like u alot but everyone can tell that yawl are doing skits because none of your people know how to act. Tell Fly Tye to stop the prank calls because everyone know it’s him; the people on the other end of the phone sound fake, they just sound like they are going along with him just because. I wish everyone good luck where ever they end up at in their careers.

I’m new to the DFW area, well I’ve been here for almost two years. I have to say, I was not impressed with the radio stations, 97.9 or k104, they are basically the same. I used to listen to the morning show on 97.9 because I didn’t know about K-Soul(which I’m just now finding out about) or 105.7. I love 105.7 it’s more my speed unfortunately I can’t get the station in my house only in the car so I listen to K104 morning show. I agree with both the good and the bad. I will say they have improved drastically compared to what they were when they first started I guess, I also listen to Murphys show on 105.7. K104 is for a younger audience, so as they say don’t like it don’t listen. I can tolerate the morning show since I can’t get 105.7 in the house. At first I didn’t care for Jade she was irritating and sounded really ignorant and yes I knew she was dumbing it down but it was almost to the point of being insulting. I think she’s much better now and will continue to get better Fly Ty I don’t care what anyone says needs to fully come out the closet and yes he’s still irritating well to me at least and no I’m not hating, Deep thug thoughts are NOT funny, they are lame and most times makes no sense well once again to me at least, I love Sam, Skip C, Chris Arnold and White Gary, but Sam especially. In a sense they are still kind of new (like me) they’ve gotten better and I think they will continue to get better. The station is just not for me, I’m into something more mature but fun, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to just rag on it, don’t like it don’t listen. It’s geared towards a younger crowd the ones that like hearing the get money, ice shining like a chandalier, stanky leg type songs all day, ten years ago this would have been most of you all’s thing to so don’t be so mean, times change, things like this happen all the time, I’m from Chicago Doug Banks and Tom Joyner were a staple for years on the morning and afternoon show from the time I was a kid until about eleven years ago, yes people were very upset because the station ousted the ‘old heads’ and got people in there who were completely different and ‘dumbing it down’ Tom Joyner went to another station V103 which used to be something like 105.7 only more diverse, it played what they called hits and dusties no rap at all not even songs with rap in it for a more mature crowd. Doug Banks left the Chicago Market for a while then came back on another K104 type station with Dee Dee and Rickey Smiley, he went from the mature market back to the younger segment, but I liked their morning show it really was funny. Now he no longer is in syndication but he has an afternoon or evening show with V103. So things change, just because it’s not your cup of tea doesn’t mean it’s stupid or dumb, your growing up surprise, just change the station.

Skip C said that June Bug was off doing his comedy thing (this was two or three weeks after he left the show), and then Chris Arnold chimed in saying he was about to blowup! (his exact words)….. They said June Bugs knows Mike Epps (like he’s bigtime) personally, and he’s gone on to do the comedy thing (without a proper send off)… They said this weeks ago on the radio, but they said it two or three weeks after June Bug was gone from the show.. My thing is: If he was really going off to do bigger and better things, why didn’t they say it on his last day of the show, and give him a proper send off… Basically he go fired, or his contract wasn’t renewed… They did the same thing to Nanette Lee (weeks after she was gone, said she was writing a book, and doing the comedy thing), and Wig, Mozon, and Hope Flood…. Everybody was let go, and the “Family” (listeners) left wondering what the hell? But that’s how they do business over there… Did they think we would just listen one morning and not notice that these people were’nt on there anymore, and not question anything… Thank God the listeners continue to call in asking where they are, otherwise we would now anything…

Thanks for clearing that up Princess2U, I just recently moved away from the Dallas area to West Texas (AAAAHHHH!!!). Anyhow I didn’t have internet access for awhile, and when I was finally able to tune into K104 online, I kept thinking where is June Bug!!! The Show is Ok, I only listen to certain parts of it before I tune into a different station. I miss Skip Murphy in the morning!!!

I think i could do a better job than fly ty not saying he sucks but i could do better.The playgroiund needs to change its name, the playground? and yall try to talk about adult subjects, it doent wash. The program direction from Skip c is cool he knows how to do that but i think he might wanna pass the torch and continue to work behind the seens, allow someone with a lil more radio personality to inject themselves along with his direction and i think the show will have full reign on the other stations.

I do believe june bug is gone off to do his comedy.. I had him saved on myspace as a friend and once he got off of the Plyground he changed his screen name to “JuneBug. ADD NEW PAGE…… Joel Runnels.. ” so i added his new page and his location to New York.. so it actually looks like his comedy may have taken off and he has relocated to make that happen.. But I love the Playground they are so funny, i’m glad they started taking some of those same songs out of rotation and started putting in some throw backs.. But they have and always will be my fav station.. 9.79 thinks that their joke are funny and that stuff is lame.. I dont even turn my radio to that station.. I know that i am tired of Ricky Smiley portraying Mrs. bernice jenkins. he was so crunk about being in the movie First Sunday and how many lines did he get? But anyways I love K104 I have been winning things from them ever since i was in middle school and im 23 now so I AM FAMILY.. I love yall playground and keep up the good work and continue to be the #1 station and for all yall hataz i you dont like it dont listen to it change the station and stop complain.. kick rocks.. I am sure that they are no longer at the top in ratings because their show is awful. All of the questions out to listeners is simply a giveaway that they have nothing to talk about, no material. Fly Tie should be on the street team, and Lady Jade is not appealing to listeners. I love the addition of Dede McGuire, although it seems like it is a little late for this team. They are just not funny or entertaining.

I miss the old morning team, I wish I can snap them back into existence but I can’t. They had a beautiful chemistry… everyone had a role, they were mature and ALWAYS had something to talk about. I can honestly say they got me through highschool. They got ALOT of people through high school… and if that isn’t a younger audience I don’t know what is! Because what is going on now… I don’t understand. I am not hating when I say LADY JADE SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE AIR… I don’t think she is funny. Why is she there? Honestly? PLEASE save this show. I just hold it with soooo much esteem and I would hate to see it fall completely to the the wayside… and I have too much pride to start listening to a new morning show (…so now I listen to nothing at all)

I don’t ever want anyone to lose their job, but maybe she could just be moved back to late nights. And the she I am referring to is, Lady Jade. She is sooo loud and I just can’t stand that from a woman. Especially, one that attempts to call herself “lady”!
Also, I’m sorry, but Skip Cheatham thinking that he is Will Smith is just so old, and he isn’t even a funny version of him. I only tune in to hear Sam Putney and Chris Arnold. I try to catch them just to hear some of what the greatest morning team ever used to sound like. If only we could get Skip Murphey and the gang all back together…
Anyway, I believe the new lady is a nice addition. She sounds mature and not as if she is trying too hard like Lady Jade does. Stick w/ her and cut Lady Jade!

well i be damned. I agree with some of the comments. I grew up with the family. When they starting cutting people I went to 97.9, however entertaining there show is it is not family. As mentioned in some commercials they do talk about places no where close to the “D”. I must stick with the “playground” (hates the name).
I have swicthed back and this team is really growing on me. Skip is not a celebrity and that tv. show is HOT GARBAGE. Jade is coming into her own and now understands her role. DEE DEE is great for the show however Fly Ty is terrible. HE’s like the lame one always trying to kick it with the ‘clique” in high school.
Chris and Sam goes without saying they should be in a Hall of Fame somewhere. MY PEOPLE THIS IS THE ONLY LOCAL STATION WE HAVE> WE MUST SUPPORT OR OUR COMMUNITY WILL NO LONGER HAVE A VOICE!! What is ironic is that the METROPLEX blew up RICKEY SMILEY and now there no longer in the community.By the way did you know most segments with Gary with the tea are recorded here, he doesn’t even be in studio with them.

Where is WHITE GARY? Okay, so I don’t listen every minute of the day, but I do turn them on around 7:45am to 8:15am, other times I’m listening to other stations… …for the past weeks I haven’t heard WHITE GARY, or heard them even refer to him…. Did he get the axe too?

I used to live in Dallas and i moved back becAUSE I HAD TO WAKE UP TO YOUR SHOW. AFTER A WHILE I STOPPED WAKING UP. I WAS DEPRESSED AND BECAME BED RIDDEN. I DID NOT LAUGH AT YOUR JOKES SO I THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH ME. I WISH THERE WAS SOMEWHERE I COULD VOTE FOR YOU TO GO OFF THE AIR. Hi Skip and the morning crew,
I looked on line for the christmas father for a day, and this the only place i can leave my commit.
well there is this kid who need a fathe for aday. I want to tell you his story first.
He is a 17 yrs old kid who is in his last year of school, 5 years ago he mother got stabed in the neck, which left her a guadripegia, she is no longer can move hands or legs, so he became hers hands and feet. the same year he met his father for the first time in his life, who were in prison. during all of this his step father who never hand anything to do with this kid, he took his two younger brother from the mom when she was hurt. After playing footballs for three years whitch is all he had to hold on too was taken away, after his physical this year the Dr. said he can not play any more due to a bad heart. This was his way out of his problem at home football was his dream. His sister finished school this year and moved out with her boyfriend,and now this kid is left alone with disable mother, because his mother is disable he live his life as her, he do not have any friends, he do not hang out with girls or boys, he go to school and back home to help mother, eat, drink and put her to bed. Skip, he don’t have a life like other teen age boys. Thru all of this you would think he would lose his mind, but not this kid never dranked, smoke, or don’t have a baby on the way. He is a good kid who deserve some happiness in his life if you find some way to meet him you would be suprised how someone can be so handsom and strong thru all of his troubles.

K104 have lost their minds.. Out of all the people to X, you chose Chris and Sam.. You are in for a real treat.. You already lost alot of listeners when Nannette and Skip Murphy exited stag left, but to pull the curtain on these two guys?? Watch your ratings sink, but I bet those two will rise… Good Luck to Chris and Sam, not that you will need it… Be Blessed, while K104 will feel the stress.. Things happen for a reason, but it was not the season for this……

Skip 2bad Rickey Smiley talked about & told everyone about the father crying on Intervention. I love Deedee she makes the show but skip I have 2give it 2 u. U have gotten funny! I think these illiterate fools need to read there comments before posting! Uh hem, do not hate on Jade. That’s MY girl. I luv how her and DeeDee interact, makes me miss my lil sis’!!! PLUS it’s reality radio not Larry King!!! For you 30+ folks who feel the playground isn’t meeting your standards, CHANGE THE DAMN STATION! Duhhh.
