Old School Friday is Back!!! Graduation Year Jam’s
Categories: Old School Friday
Written By: Shawn Williams
Now that my video situation is resolved after a year and a half, I’m able to fully participate in Old School Fridays once again. The theme today is “Music from the year that you graduated high school.” For me that’s the 9 deuce.
I have two for you. What kind of list would this be without Mary J. who came into my life in 1992. I’m going with the Real Love Remix. How this song as eluded my ITunes is beyond me. I even forgot about the Notorious B.I.G. guest flow.
On December 15, 1992, Dr. Dre. released The Chronic, and Rap/Hip Hop hasn’t been the same since. This was back before Snoop became a money making caricature of himself (I ain’t mad atcha bruh).
Nothing But a G Thang was more of a freshman year in college jam than a high school jam, but it’s still one of the best of all time. May not be the most inspirational video, but that funky baseline still makes you nod your head.

Well hello there fellow ‘92 graduate.
You and I were most definitely in the same headspace. Happy OSF and welcome back!

Happy OSF! Two excellent selections. Mary J. Blige is a popular choice with OSF participants today. She must have ‘Whats the 411′ on that same 1992 album….
I invite your blog readers to check out my tribute to Bootsy Collins and Parliament Funkadelic. I graduated from high school in 1976 when Bootsy’s Rubber Band and the George Clinton’s P-Funk were at the height of their powers. Back then we didn’t have television videos, so the musical talent needed to be creative with their visuals on top of having excellent music. Did you ever attend a funk-music concert back in the day?

You can never go wrong with Mary J!! And even though I am a totally different person …now, Dre and Snoop were the hottest things to come out of the West Coast for a minute! I still bob my head to it! Nothing but a G thing HAD to be everyone’s jam for a minute!

Personally, I have to go with my HS grad year, not college year, this Friday… I’ve been in a sentimental mood lately and Love Jones was my favorite movie that year–1997! Soooooo, I have to bring back Lauryn Hill’s “The Sweetest Thing”… THAT was my jam!!

Great picks! I Love Mary J. who has carved out her place in the elite vocalists club.

Now that’s some old school rap I can get into. I confess I’ve never been deep into rap, but the rappers I do like tend to be the old school variety, and The Chronic featuring Snoop and Dre back in the day definitely qualifies as some of the good stuff. Great choice!
Hate to say it since everyone here seems to love Mary so much, but I just can’t quite get into her that much. Never could. But hey, she’s getting paid just fine without me, right?

Real Love was a summer jam that included club hits, road trips, girls night out lol. The Chronic was a hood classic that was bumped in many of cars at ear splitting decibels. Great choices.

Shawn! Glad to have you at the party once again!
I don’t know what I would do without Mary…
And that Snoop and Dre…what a combination!
Great picks!
And I’m actually able to read your site and leave a comment…now that is progress!
